Inserting markers

To get the optimal result of page numbering and of the automatic recognition of headings, you must insert so called markers in your word-file before uploading the file.

Markers are text inserted between square brackets, like [body]

These markers will control how the web service behave, and what values are being used in the mark-up.

Markers are always lowercase.

back

Supported markers

[body] and [/body] to mark start and end of the body section of your text.

[h1], [h2], [h3], [h4] [h5] and [h6] to mark the 6 levels of headings that are allowed in dtbook. Headings are only handled inside the body of the text.

[page=#] where # is a lowercase roman number.

[page=#] where # is any arabic number.

back

Structural markers

You must use the [body] to mark the start of the body section of the text and [/body] to mark the end of the body section of your text if you want headings to be marked up.

back

Page markers

You can use the page marker to allow your page numbering to start from any number you want. The page numbering require that your document has either section breaks or page breaks for each page.

Roman numbering is selected by using [page=#] where # is any lowercase roman number, e.g. [page=ix].

Arabic numberering is selected by using [page=#] where # is any Arabic number, e.g. [page=12] will start the numbering from 12.

You can insert as many [page=#] markers in the text as you need. The page numbering will be made in accordance with your specifications.

Heading markers

The heading markers are used for identification of headings in your document.

Our analysis of your document is based on the formatting attributes of the headings in your text, and we need a few examples from each of the headings in your document.

These examples does not need to appear in succession, but to get the best result you must provide us with at least one sample of each heading on any level.

Sometimes your headings might differ in their typographical appearance throughout your document, and we recommend that you insert heading markers for each "look" of any heading.

Our engine will insert heading styles according to your selection. If we find items that our engine "think" is a heading, it will be marked as a text at outline level 7. You can examine and correct these headings in the document we return, and make your choice of moving them to another level or to skip them as headings.

You can use Word's Outline view to make this check.

back

Omitting markers?

If you don't insert page-markers, pages will not be found.

If don't insert heading-markers, headings will not be identified.

We strongly recommend that you spend 5 to 10 minutes to insert markers for body and for examples of headings for each level. This will increase the quality of the mark up we return to you significantly, thus reducing the need for further corrections from you.

back

Processing time

The current processing time is around 4 minutes for a 300 page book (+ time for upload).

Arriving documents will be processed on a first-in first-out basis.
